Aim
begynn å lære
To investigate the effects of dopamine on the behavioural symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Participants
begynn å lære
40 patients with severe Parkinson’s disease (mean duration of the disease was 14 years, aging 34-75 years)
Method and design
begynn å lære
Experiment; independent measures design
Neuroimaging technique
begynn å lære
PET scan
Procedure 1/2
begynn å lære
- In the experimental group cells with dopamine producing neurons were taken from aborted embryos and transplanted into the patient's brain (putamen) - In control group skull was drilled but there was no transplantation
Procedure 2/2
begynn å lære
Patients were followed for one year. PET scans - estimate changes in the brain. Clinical observations and interviews - register changes in symptoms.
Results
begynn å lære
PET scans revealed significant growth of dopamine producing cells in putamen of transplant group. Patients in the transplant group represented reduction of disease by 28% (only in the relatively younger group - below 60)
