Categories of Business Processes

Order-to-stock; Quote-to-order; Procure-to-pay; Issue-to-resolution; Application-to-approval

Order-to-cash

performed by a vendor, starts with submitting order for a product, service, ends with delivery and payment; may encompass order verification, shipment, delivery, invoicing

Quote-to-order

typically, precedes Order-to-stock, customer requests a price quote and Des with customer placing an order; Order-to-stock and quote-to-order can be combined into quote-to-cash process

Procure-to-pay

obtaining quotes, approving purchase, selecting supplier; dual to quote-to-cash process

Issue-to-resolution

customer raises an issue, continues until ideally both agree that the issue has been resolved; claim-to-resolution

application-to-approval

starts with request, ends with approval/denial; building permit, business permit, application to degree program

ingredients of a business process

events (no duration); activities (events can trigger a number of activities); decision points (decision made affects processes); outcome (positive or negative)

events - starts with a noun; purchase order received; activities - starts with a verb in imperative form; approve order; process model - noun preceded by an adjective; order fulfilment process
